Awakening of democracy. Can it be seen as rising mobocracy or emerging youth power ?

Problem of corruption is not new. As we kept progressing, this menace also kept growing and hampering percolation of fruits of progress downwards to the masses. Sleeping anger over the issue needed chanalization and a vent to come out. So this potential energy turned into kinetic energy when person like Anna Hazare ji applied force of his high moral uprightness. Since last April, agitation over the issue of Lokpal or Jan Lokpal bill keep turning into a movement led by a 75 year old but followed by the youth of India. I was eagerly following day to day developments on electronics as well as print media since then and finally watched live debate over the issue in Lok Sabha.

As soon as Anna began his fast, many voices were heard saying that one can not force parliament to enact a law. Yes. This is true. But as an Aam Aadmi, one question puzzles me. Why so many people came on roads clamoring for enactment of Jan Lokpal bill hear and now-ABHI KE ABHI ? When I came to know the history of Lokpal bill that it kept appearing in the Lok sabha for last 42 years and went to the relevant standing committee for 8 times and yet it remains to be enacted I felt that actually it was not ABHI KE ABHI as we were made to understand by the section of experts and politicians. And this is the reason why I watched live telecast of Lok sabha debate. I was looking for introspection by our hon’ble MPs and acceptance of the fact that the delay in enacting Lokpal bill was abnormal. Viewing the debate form this angle, I am disappointed as the speeches of senior members though appeared to be some what introspective, the emphasis was on pointing fingers at others rather than to take on the responsibility for a situation which was created because of dilly-dallying the resolution of an issue as long as 42 to years. However, I must appreciate forthrightness, presentation and spontaneity of almost all hon’ble young members who spoke on the issue. Noticeable among them are S/shri Jayant Chaudhary-RLD, Harsimrat Kaur Badal-SAD, Varun Gandhi-BJP, Jyotir Aditya Sindhia-INC and Ajay Kumar-JVMP. These young MPs in the august house and the youngsters on the road who displayed vigor, awareness and sensitivity to the issue convinced me of the emerging youth power in India.

Why I was so eager to look for the introspection by our hon’ble representatives because I feel that this can be the antidote to the danger of compromising parliamentary supremacy. Introspection and acceptance of truth that as representatives of the people they failed to meet the aspirations of the people would have gone a long way in assuaging feeling of disappointment among the people.

Finally, I would like to conclude by saying that if politicians keep their radars tuned to the wishes and aspirations of the people and keep translating those wishes and aspirations in appropriate policies and mechanisms of governance in a reasonable time frame, no one needs to fear emergence of mobocracy. On the contrary, insensitivity to the core issues affecting day to day life of the people and abnormal dilly-dallying in the resolution of such issues is really fraught with the danger of people choosing direct expression of raw supremacy themselves rather than allowing it to emanate through institutions constituted by them.
